A Walk in the Woods

If you’re a dog owner, you’ll know how important they are. They’re with you through thick and thin. I was contacted by Ashley to do a portrait session with her dog Nico in the California Redwoods. Something to capture their bond in an epic setting.

We arrived at Samuel P. Taylor Redwood State Park in the late afternoon. The sun was already starting to dip below the tree line. We were looking for pockets of warm light surrounded by the massive redwoods.

We hiked through some trails and found a few areas of grass and a massive fallen log with some moss on it (see photos below). Armed with a few pieces of cheese and my camera, we went to work.

Trying to get a dog to sit and look where you want, when you want isn’t exactly easy. You definitely want to have the owner engage with their dog as naturally as they can, almost as if the camera isn’t there. They key is to pay attention to where the dog’s attention is and position yourself to get the angles you need. Fortunately we were able to capture some really intimate moments in between the treats, grass eating, and sniffing all the smells the forest has to offer.

Where would you go to take portraits with your dog? Check out some of the photos below!
